I've been pimping this band for a while now but it didn't occur to me until recently to post about them here. Duh. I first heard Frausdots' song "Soft Light" on a Sub Pop sampler CD my brother gave me after he was done with it and fell in love with it instantly (I was much less impressed with the rest of the album, however). Taking their cues from The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen, Frausdots combines elements of 80s pop and dream rock to produce music similar to Interpol or Luna but with a delicious new spin.

Arguably one of the most important indie bands of all time, some of Beat Happening's best raw and catchy post-punk tunes can be found on their self-titled album, downloadable here (Part One), here (Part Two), and here (Part Three). My favorites would have to include Our Secret, Fourteen and Foggy Eyes, but then again, there are too many Beat Happening greats to just pick a few.

This band is totally gay (they call themselves "an utterly genderqueer musical sensation"), but Antony & The Johnsons is endearing in its syrupy David Bowie ballads and strange, fluttery vocals à la Hedwig & The Angry Inch. Let's drop more names: the cover of their new LP is a picture of Andy Warhol's bff Candy Darling, and Devendra Banhart loves Antony. This music is for when you and your boyfriend break up and David Bowie is just too mainstream for you. Or maybe not so much. Just listen.

This band hails from the early '90's but evokes the sound from the early '60's incredibly well. They're like The Shins but better and with no exposure. I got hooked on "Carol Mountain" when I bought this CD (which is incredibly good) yesterday, and two of the following tracks can be found at their website.

I am predicting this will be even better than 2004's Satanic Panic in the Attic, but I guess only time will tell. Mirah is sublime. That's the only word that fits. Her voice is an endearing mix of chanteuse and little-girl, her music is melodic and beautiful and catchy, and her lyrics are quiet and intelligent and powerful. Mirah makes beautiful earnest progressive little protest indie love songs.

K Records stars Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening and Doug Martsch of Built to Spill teamed up in the 90s as The Halo Benders to release a few excellent albums, combining the sounds of their own respective bands beautifully. While they haven't actually broken up, both Johnson and Martsch went back to concentrate on their seperate band's careers after The Halo Bender's third album was released in 1998. So pause that Bright Eyes (don't worry, Max, we all have guilty pleasures) and take a listen:

Sometimes, I just wish that Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields was Swedish. While that's probably not going to happen very soon, we can very well imagine what it would be like thanks to the Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman. Lekman's songs are soft and gentle and lacking in irony, like a Eurocentric and less morose Nick Drake.

Oh, and his music video for "You Are The Light" totally kix ass. Sometimes, the police are so benevolent it's downright scary.
